An older man with a beard wearing a blue shirt, apron, and boots is sculpting a white horse sculpture in an art studio. The man is holding a sculpting tool, and the horse sculpture is on a wooden stand. The studio has various busts and sculptures in the background.

Barry Davies RCA

Born in Mid Wales in 1962, Barry Davies began his career as a traditional cabinetmaker and carver in 1989, drawing on his precision engineering apprenticeship and a lifelong commitment to figurative art. This foundation, together with his Art History studies with the Open University, led him to evolve from high-relief decorative carving and heritage restoration into three-dimensional sculpture, producing classical and neo-classical marble portrait busts and large-scale statues of historical figures.

Elected a Royal Cambrian Academician in 2019, Barry has exhibited in cathedrals across England and Wales, as well as at international art fairs and exhibitions in Florence, Rome, Barcelona, Venice, Verona, London, Oxford and Milan. His work combines a precise understanding of human and animal anatomy—especially equine forms—with themes spanning natural history, palaeontology and anthropology, and is held by collectors in Europe, the United States and Asia.

The sculptures I create must convey a boldness and dynamic physical presence combined with a sense of movement and elegance. My passion for studying human and animal anatomy has allowed me to portray an emotional almost electrifying event through the muscular tensions within a body or a piercing glare in response to surprise.
